Dohertys
John Doherty and his family among whom not only fiddlers but pipers such as Tarlaght Mc Sweeney " An Piobaire Mor" were members that it also reflect the strong ties between Scotland and Donegal. Given that music was taken to Donegal from Scotland by seasonal workers. Johns family admired the Scottish fiddler James Scott Skinner and he heavily influenced John and his brothers. Also Johns forefathers came from Argyl in Scotland in 1314 after the battle of Banockburn. They were the clan Mc Sweeney and their castle now in ruins is still there, castle Sween. Johns greatgrandfather Hugh Doherty married the sister of Eamon Rua Mc Sweeney one Nana Rua Mc Sweeney. Eamon was the 16th and last chief of clan Mc Suibhne of Doe Castle and was evicted by Adair from Derryveagh along with many families. Eamon was the father of Tarlagh Mc Sweeney the King Piper. Music and Scotland run like a red thread within his family as it does with Donegal. So hopefully advocating The Dohertys, Donegal and Scotland is no bad profile for the next "Cup ofTae" in 2010 in Ardara. Im sure all the musicians from the 70s who travelled to Donegal as budding fiddlers to learn from him will flock to Ardara to celebrate his memory not to mention the Scotts, after all there is much music they may want to bring "home" again. If my memory serves me right an American visited John for several months in the 50s just to study his music and life style, saw him on TV a few weeks ago singing for Obama at his inauguration in Washinton, It was Pete Seegar who carries the banner after Woody Guthery.
Thank you Stephen for your swift reply. May I be so bold as to suggest that if next years Cup of Tae is a tribute to John Doherty and his family among whom not only fiddlers but pipers such as Tarlaght Mc Sweeney " An Piobaire Mor" were members that it allso reflect the strong ties between Scotland and Donegal. Given that music was taken to Donegal from Scotland by seasonal workers.
